The Great State Fair of Texas

A few weeks ago, we finally took time to go to the State Fair in Dallas!  I (Marci) have been wanting to go since  moving to TX in 2010.
Apparently, as a child growing up in the Dallas area, Ben got free days from school to go to the fair.  But I wanted to experience the greatness of the fair for myself!

It was a lot of fun because Ben's family was able to join us!  The best part was that being with a group of people we could try all sorts of delicious (and terrible for you) fried delicacies, without over eating (and still limiting the calories...to some extent).

Food

Normally, I don't just post on the blog to tell everyone what I have been eating lately, but I feel that the state fair is somewhat of an exception, so here it goes.

Footlong sausage sandwich.

Then fried thanksgiving dinner (turkey and dressing in a fried ball with gravy and cranberry dipping sauce)

The amazing red velved funnel cake (with cream cheese drizzle)

It went pretty fast.

Fried spinach artichoke dip

Along with those we also had fried cheese curds (one of my favorite things we tried), fried pizza with crust made from Cooler Ranch Doritos, (numerous) fried corndogs, and a fried cuban roll.

That's what the state fair is for right? Anyways, all were delicious (or at least interesting) and I didn't even feel terrible at the end of the day from all the fried goodness.

Festivities

Probably the most entertaining events of the day were the races, pig races and ostrich races, that is.

The little pigs were adorable and got a plate full of oreos for winning.

The ostriches were riden by jockeys!

Of course we saw lots of other animals, cow milking demonstrations, art/craft exhibits and product demonstrations.  I went by the Vitamix booth twice to get vegetable/fruit juice samples to make myself feel better for having eaten so much terrible (for me) food.  Gotta get in my veggies!  And according to the guy at the booth, blending a tomato in a Vitamix is like eating 3 tomatoes!  (insert eye roll here)

One of my other favorite parts of the day was a cooking demonstration, complete with take home recipes - the baker made salted caramel oatmeal cream pies.  They were amazing!  I will have to attempt them some time in the near future.

And of course there was my first visit with (the new) Big Tex!

See ya next time
Big Tex!
