Garage Workbench

A few months ago I was lucky enough to get a whole kitchen's worth of base cabinets for free! I had been planning on building a work bench soon, so this was great timing.

Apologies for poor photographs. They were mostly taken with my cell phone in poor lighting.

Below are the cabinets as I got them. They were in pretty rough condition. Many years of kitchen happened to them, as well as what appeared to be crayon artwork.

Not pictured: Kitchen Sink. No seriously, they came with a sink.
Worst of all was the color.

I call this pink vomit with gold accent.

Soon I began the restoration process by sanding the cabinets.

Followed by more sanding.

Then there was the hours of sanding.

Also, I purchased some "premium stripper" to try and get the paint out of the groves and details of the doors. That was probably the funniest Home Depot receipt I've ever had.
"Premium Stripper              $9.99"
I had mild success with the stripper, and went back to the sanding.

Eventually I got to the point of diminishing returns. Then I sanded some more!

After a while I decided to hurry things up and start applying stain and polyurethane. Below you can see all the pieces strewn about the garage drying.

The fumes..... No wonder the hours passed by so quicky.

Much better cabinet hardware.

Finally it was time for assembly. My friend Oliver lent a very helpful set of hands.

Clamps are a man's best friend.

Power Tools!

Finished product!

Shiney.

Next Steps:

  1. I still have one more base cabinet that I hope to turn into a utility sink by the door to the house from the garage.
  2. I also have a wall cabinet that came with the base cabinets. I restored it, but need to find a home for it.
  3. Pegboard above the workbench
